The charging drawer, explained: watts, cables, and what to throw out
One connector shape now covers a dozen capabilities, and nothing on the outside of a cable tells you which ones you bought.
The universal connector was supposed to end the drawer of incompatible cables. Instead it produced a drawer of identical cables with wildly different abilities, none of which is visible from the outside. One charges a laptop and carries a monitor signal. Another, the same length and color, moves data at a crawl and refuses to charge anything demanding.
The connector is standardized. What travels through it is not. Once you know which capabilities are separate, the drawer becomes manageable and you can throw most of it away.
Four independent things a cable might do
A USB-C cable can carry power, data, and video, and it can do each of those at very different levels. These are separate features. A cable that is excellent at one may be incapable of another, and the plug looks the same either way.

This is why the cable that came with your phone often fails to run a monitor, and why a cable that charges a laptop fine can take an hour to transfer a folder of video. Neither is broken. They were built for one job at a price.
Power: the device decides, not the charger
A common worry is that a big charger will damage a small device. It will not. Modern USB-C charging works by negotiation: the device asks for a voltage and current it can accept, the charger agrees or offers less, and the device draws only what was agreed. A high-wattage laptop charger plugged into earbuds delivers earbud-sized power.
The disappointment runs the other way. A small charger on a hungry device charges it slowly, and if you are working the machine hard it may only slow the battery's decline rather than filling it. Nothing breaks. It just takes forever, and people conclude the battery is failing when the real problem is a charger left over from a previous device.
Multi-port chargers add one wrinkle worth knowing. The advertised wattage is usually the total across all ports, and it gets divided when you plug in a second device — often unevenly, and often by dropping the first port to a much lower level. If you plug in a phone and your laptop slows to a trickle, that is why. The specification is printed on the charger in small type, and it is worth reading once.
Buying cables without guessing
- Buy for the hardest job you have. One cable that handles high power, fast data, and video costs more than a basic one and eliminates every subsequent question.
- Prefer certified cables from a manufacturer that publishes actual capabilities rather than adjectives. Look for the stated wattage and data speed on the listing.
- Keep the fastest cables short. Speed and length are in direct tension, and a very long cable claiming top-tier data speed either contains active electronics or is optimistic.
- Do not buy a charger that fails to state its output. Reputable power supplies carry safety markings and a clear voltage and current table; the very cheapest ones are the one accessory category where cutting corners can genuinely start a fire.
- Two good cables beat six mystery ones. Most households need a couple of capable cables and a couple of cheap ones for bedside charging.
The most useful five minutes you can spend is labeling. Once a cable is identified, wrap a strip of colored tape near the plug or write on it with a marker — one color for the do-everything cables, another for charge-only. This sounds fussy and it removes an entire recurring annoyance from your life.
Making cables last
Cables almost always fail in the same place: the inch just behind the plug, where the wire flexes every time you pull it out at an angle. The conductors inside break strand by strand, which is why a dying cable works intermittently before it stops.
- Pull the plug, not the cable. Most damage happens to cables yanked out of a socket by the middle.
- Coil loosely, in loops the size of your hand, rather than wrapping tightly around a laptop or a charger. Tight wraps concentrate the bend exactly where the wire is weakest.
- Do not leave a cable under tension across a bedside table, where the phone hangs off the plug all night.
- Retire a cable that only works at a certain angle. Intermittent contact means heat at the joint, and heat at a connector is not a problem worth living with.
Ports need occasional attention too. A phone that charges only when the cable is held at an angle is usually not a broken port — it is a port packed with pocket lint, compressed into a solid disc at the bottom by months of plugging in. Power the device off and gently scrape it out with a wooden toothpick. It is startling how much comes out, and it fixes what people frequently pay to have diagnosed.
Finally, wireless charging is convenient and comes with a small tax: it produces more heat than a cable, and heat is what wears batteries down. Use it during the day, plug in overnight, and keep the phone case free of anything metallic that would sit between the coils.
